Resist art is a technique that uses layers to shape invisible designs or patterns. The artist uses a clear medium such as tape or wax or a medium that has color but is resistant to paint, then paints over the covered area with a layer of color. We used watercolor in this instance. The color from the paint will stick to the paper surrounding the crayons for instance but not the wax itself, letting the resist layer show through. This Christmas tree resist art project allows for a lot of creativity! In addition to a Christmas tree art design, you could create other holiday shapes such as a stocking, candy cane or gift and have fun creating zentangle art designs within it with your crayons.

We really enjoyed creating this Festive Christmas Tree Art using Resist Art and think you will too! Let’s get started!

Christmas Tree Art using Resist Directions:

  1. Create trees by using simple shapes- tall narrow triangles for the trees and rectangles for the base/trunk of the trees. You may want to do this with a pencil first then write over with crayon. Younger children may need help with this part.
  2. Next, you can color in the trees using crayons, making whatever creative design you come up with. Add swirls and designs to the trees and even stars and fun swirls in the sky. You can get inspiration by referring to these fun zentangle art designs. There are so many ways to get creative and no wrong way about it!
  3. Now, use your watercolors to paint over your entire painting, watching the beautiful color combinations emerge. Using multiple watercolors to get unique results makes for a beautiful scene.
