This drawing project was inspired by that little giraffe head that’s floating all over Pinterest. You know, the one where there’s a small giraffe head cut out of a magazine, glued onto a piece of paper, and the kid drew everything else in the picture around it.

Of course, when I go searching for it, I have no idea where I pinned it. Speaking of pinning, I’d love it if you came to join me on the almighty Pinterest.

Now. On to the project!

We get an alarming number of catalogs, as I’m sure you do. I was leafing through a Lands End catalog of cute summer clothes for kids, and had a lightbulb moment…..

….so I grabbed some scissors and cut out a few outfits and stick-glued them down to white card stock. Fen walked by and was intrigued. It only took her a few more times of walking by until she agreed to join me in giving these little outfits some bodies!

First she drew with pencil, and then went over the lines with a thin black Sharpie.

She added in some backgrounds. I love seeing the different poses she chose for them- these ladies know how to work that camera!

While she really enjoyed this, I’d love to see how a slightly younger kid- maybe 7 or 8- would approach this. I love projects that give you a starting point to add onto.

SInce Fen didn’t want to draw the boy models, I handed one over to Christian, who happily complied:

  1. I love this idea and so will my class. Will be placing in my creative area tomorrow, thank you for sharing.

  2. I love this! I’ve been trying to figure out a way to put people into my collages. I think I might try this out. I’ve never been very good at figure drawing. If I only have to add limbs and a head I just might be able to pull it off!
