Kid Rooms As A Form Of Expression

If you think about it, kid rooms are the ultimate in creative self-expression for kids. There they are, in their little private spaces, having collected things they love, surrounding them as they sleep and work and hang out with friends.

These areas are them. They reflect their attitudes, their tastes, their personalities, and it happens so naturally. They use their creative minds to arrange things in their room to their liking and the result is something uniquely suited to them.

I love kid rooms as they usually aren’t restricted to the same design rules as the rest of the house, and usually contain all sorts of surprises. I’ve been documenting Fen’s room for a few years and I wondered if other parents do the same. I love to see what she does in there, and especially how proud and excited she is to show off the little (or major) changes.

Do you do this? Do your kids rearrange their rooms every month like my daughter does? We let her do her thing and make her own decisions about how she wants her room for the most part (the nail holes in the walls had to finally stop being added.)

I love this. My sons have shown zero interest in decorating their rooms. ZERO.

Wow, every month your kids rearrange their furniture? We do that every few years. Your kids have energy! I love it when my kids rearrange their room because it means it finally gets clean!

That’s a good point- the vacuum usually comes pout and a big garbage bag gets filled when the rooms are arranged. Actually, maybe it’s more of a ‘girl’ thing to do…. but there is no end to the ways they move around their furniture.
