I’ve just embarked on a cooking and baking freak-out that includes all the regular stuff I make every year, with a few new things thrown in for good-fatty-measure.
I am so not an entertainer, and I like to cook only on rare occasions, so the one time a year that people come here is Christmas. That’s when my gorgeous sister and my raucous dad come hang out at Casa Tiny Rotten Peanuts, and we do it up.
I have learned that it is much wiser to pre-make stuff and freeze it instead of flying into a panic the week of Christmas. I am old and learned.
Here’s my list of items we eat, and some of these are basically me trying to please my dad because it’s shit my mom would make every year for Christmas.
1. Chex Mix. My dad eats this crap by the trough-full, and it fascinates me. In fact, I think he would be happy to munch solely on these and item #2 the entire week he’s here.
3. Sugar Cookies. I use a Martha recipe. I made a bad Martha recipe for sugar cookies last time and vowed to only ever make this recipe again, so there you have it. These taste lovely, roll out even lovelier, and are a regular riot to decorate. Especially when Aunt Kate is over and decides to make some anatomically correct sugar cookie fellas.
4. We have one meal during Xmas that consists of: cheeses and crackers, summer sausage, shrimps, vegetables and dips, and various other little bites. This is my all-time favorite way to eat and I lay it all out with a flourish and we sit around the tree and the millions of candles and watch the gentle snow falling on the great outdoors. Our cheeks turn slightly rosy with the glow of contentment and a lovely Christmas tune wafts from the speakers. Then somehow Farmer eats the rest of everything, including the shrimp tails, and we spend the remainder of the evening trying not to vomit from her ungodly fumes.
5. We go to Christian’s parents’ house each year for either Christmas eve or Christmas day, and eat a bunch of holiday Swedish food. Hello, tiny meatballs. The remaining night Christian and I create a sumptuous feast. Last year Christian made Beef Wellington for us.
I have also prepared: Vegetable soup, bacon, cheese, spinach quiche, calzones, and I can’t remember what else but I’m about to pass out in a heap. What do you make for holiday food? Tell me now.
