Creative Apps: Alphie The Squid

I keep trying to lay off of reviewing kid apps for a little while, but then I encounter an app like Alphie the Squid, and I’m smitten. In fact, I checked out this app before I let Fen on and I ended up playing it for nearly an hour.

It’s not exactly a learning app, although you do learn about some different types of fish, and about some Giant Squid traits. It’s mostly a game- a rather relaxing yet captivating game. I think the lovely soundtrack has a lot to do with it, and they encourage you to wear headphones as you are playing.

The key here is to consume as many fish and fish eggs as you can because, after all, you are a GIANT SQUID. Yes, you are Alphie, making your way in the vast ocean.

At some point in the second level you encounter Sea Urchins and Clams, both of which you want to stay away from since they will hurt you. But keep chasing those fish; you’ll get bigger!

You happen to have a few secret weapons in your squid arsenal including: the ability to spray black ink and the magical power to sort of hypnotize the fish around you so you can chow them down more easily. Fen showed me these. She’s smarter than I am.

Fen is absorbed with it. She keeps reading to me the different fish in her gallery (that Alphie has eaten.)

By the way, did you know that Giant Squid can eat small whales?

My kids would love Alphie. And they would want me to play too, just so they can laugh at my ineptitude at games.

Yep, when I play a game anywhere near my daughter, I have to keep one eye on her so she doesn’t grab the iPad from my hands to show me what I’m doing wrong!

I would definitely ink my enemy. Can I choose the color?

    • 09/05/2013 / 4:04 pm

For sure. (only in real life- not in the app.) Even rainbow ink, probably. You’ll be the prettiest giant squid in all the sea.

That’s so weird because I was TOTALLY thinking rainbow colored ink. You must be stalking my thoughts!

Ha! You know I am. It’s all crazy up in that brain of yours….

Hmmm. I think my little one is going to love Alphie the squid.:)

My son went through a huge squid phase! I hope this app can pry him away from Minecraft for a few moments….

Honestly, I don’t think anything can pry kids away from Minecraft. Maybe you’ll enjoy playing it next to him while he plays Minecraft. 🙂

My son Alfie (5) would love the fact this game has the same name as him and he loves playing games with animals in them. Also there are so many games on the internet about shooting something so it is always great to find one that isnt and the graphics look great.
